Fosse Gallery, The Manor House, The Square, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire, GL54 1AF

With 'The World Was All Before Them' Charlie Calder-Potts presents a solo exhibition of miniature paintings that fuse ancient craft and contemporary photography.

Charlie Calder-Potts is concerned with cultures and traditions overshadowed by conflict and politics, her practice informed by artist residencies in Afghanistan, Syria, Iran and Iraq. In 2021 the artist defied the pandemic to join miniature painter and art instructor Heraa Khan in Pakistan.

Applying a unique process that begins with the meticulous preparation of paint base and pigments and the fabrication of fine brushes from squirrel hair, the resulting body of 30 works celebrates ancient Indo-Persian mastery with the largest measuring a mere 21 inches. By reversing gender roles and by inserting present-day characters into historical ceremonial and hunting scenes, Charlie Calder-Potts presents a thoughtful piece of cultural reportage.

'The World Was All Before Them' is the artist's fourth solo exhibition with Fosse Gallery, one of the UK's most important contemporary galleries outside London.

Charlie Calder-Potts is a British mixed media artist based in the UK. Combining photography, painting and drawing, her work looks at history and its repetitive nature; the value of our heritage and our similarities to previous generations and to each other.

She has had many notable exhibitions and commissions both in the UK and abroad.

Previous projects include her selection as an Official War Artist with the British Army in Afghanistan 2013/14, private commissions in Iraq in 2015 and Tajikistan in 2016, a collaborative project sponsored by The British Arts Council in Iran, 2017/18 and Russia 2018/19. In May 2021 she was awarded the QEST scholarship (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) for her project in Pakistan, and the resulting body of work appears in this exhibition.
Founded in 1980, Fosse Gallery presents contemporary British art of international standing in Stow-on-the-Wold.

Surrounded by stunning Cotswolds countryside and a short drive from Soho Farmhouse, the gallery is a 15 minute taxi ride from Kingham railway station (direct trains run hourly from London Paddington).
