Sally Ward graduated from Norwich School of Art in 1974 and some of the works from her Degree Show were used in a television production of Roald Dahl’s story Neck. Following the advice of one of her tutors, Katherine Gili, Sally completed an Advanced Sculpture Course at St Martins in London.  After leaving St Martins Sally shared a studio with Katherine and worked part time as her assistant, helping her forge a sculpture for the exhibition “Have you seen Sculpture from the Body?” at Tate Britain in 1984.

For many years Sally worked as an Artist/educator and ran workshops in a wide variety of institutions including Tate Britain, The British Museum and the Museum of London. She led groups around art galleries in London where she was inspired by the expressive colour of Matisse, Kandinsky and the German Expressionists. Sally worked as an assistant in the family Leaning department in the London Tate Galleries where she had a design accepted for an Under 5s Play Area sourced from the Cubist works in the galleries.

Sally has experimented with a broad spectrum of materials  including steel, wood and mixed media. For the last few years she has been developing her practice in the study of form using recycled paper mixed with a variety of materials to generate a type of paper/stone. She then build forms from this material and gradually constructs by combining the forms until they create a finished piece.  Colour has become an essential and integrated part of her sculptures.

Sally’s practice also includes drawing, painting and collage.
