The Cenote Ring is a solo exhibition of recent works by multimedia artist Paola Estrella. Following a collaborative performance at Stone Nest, HS Projects presents the paintings at the heart of the project.

Comprising two distinct, yet intricately connected parts, The Cenote Ring constitutes the artist's interpretation of the unique geological formations in her native Mexico, which have served as a source of wonder and inspiration for generations of explorers and storytellers.

Estrella perceives the underwater landscapes as sites of myth, memory and transformation, depicting the otherworldly atmosphere of the overgrown sinkholes in layers of vibrant textures and forms. The digital elements of the recent performance reconnected the cenotes with the asteroids that created them billions of years ago. The paintings capture the natural beauty of the caves, their unique characteristics and narratives connecting into sites of ecological and spiritual sonority.

The Cenote Ring describes the bond between the earth and the universe, past and future, nature and humans.

Paola Estrella is a multimedia artist from Mexico based in London. She has performed at CCA Goldsmiths, South London Gallery and the V&A, among others.

She was commissioned by CW+ to exhibit in ‘Journeys: Healing Arts’ at Saatchi Gallery. She was selected for New Contemporaries 2022. She won the Travers Smith CSR Programme 2021, was shortlisted for the LUMEN Art Prize and exhibited at the Museum of Mexico City in 2021. Her work was selected by White Cube Gallery for Tomorrow:London in 2020.

Estrella holds a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in Contemporary Art and studied art direction and mixed media at Central Saint Martins.
HS Projects, founded by experienced curators Alistair Howick and Tina Sotiriadi, produce and deliver ambitious projects that seek to engage and increase awareness and enjoyment of contemporary art for all.

They have a special interest in delivering artistic interventions and projects in unexpected, non-gallery places, creatively using art to access new audiences and building meaningful relationships with artists. From large-scale group exhibitions to solo presentations, they have been working with a diverse range of international, innovative artists for more than 25 years.

This project has been made possible thanks to support from the Arts Council National Lottery Project Grants, and Artists Make Space Programme at Orleans House Gallery.
